Jeffreys Bay Travel Guide: Surf, Sun & the Best Stays

Known worldwide as one of the top surfing destinations on the planet, J-Bay offers far more than just waves — here's everything you need to know before you visit.

📍 75 km from Gqeberha🌊 Best surf: June – July🏖️ Best beach weather: Oct – Mar✈️ Nearest airport: PLZ (Gqeberha)

Why Jeffreys Bay?

Jeffreys Bay — or J-Bay as it's universally known — sits about 75 km west of Gqeberha on the Eastern Cape coast. It earned its reputation in the 1960s when surfers started chasing what is still considered one of the longest, most perfect right-hand point breaks in the world. Today the town hosts a World Surf League Championship Tour event every July, drawing the sport's elite alongside tens of thousands of spectators.

But even if you've never stood on a surfboard, J-Bay is worth the trip. It's a laid-back coastal town with warm water (relative to Cape Town), excellent seafood, a genuine arts and craft scene, and easy access to the Addo Elephant National Park — all at prices that still feel reasonable compared to the Western Cape.

Best surf spots

Supertubes is the main event — a fast, hollow right-hander that can barrel for up to 800 metres on a good day. Experienced surfers only. Just around the point you'll find Impossibles and Boneyards, slightly less intense but still demanding.

Kitchen Windows and Albatross are the more forgiving beginner-to-intermediate breaks further along the bay. Several surf schools operate right on the beach — most will have you standing up within a session or two.

Local tip: During the WSL event in July, Supertubes gets extremely crowded with spectators. Stay a week either side if you want to surf it in relative peace — the swell usually hangs around.

Beaches

The main beach stretches for kilometres and is broad and sandy — ideal for swimming from November to March when the water is at its warmest. Dolphin Beach at the northern end is a favourite with families. The coastline is also excellent for spotting dolphins and whales from shore, particularly between June and November when the whales migrate close to the coast.

Things to do beyond surfing

  • 🛍️Surf shops and factory outlets — J-Bay is home to Billabong and other major surf brands, with factory stores offering gear at noticeably reduced prices.
  • 🐘Addo Elephant National Park — about 100 km away, one of South Africa's most accessible Big Five reserves and well worth a full day.
  • 🦅Kabeljous Nature Reserve — a short drive from town with good birdwatching and easy walking trails.
  • 🎨Arts and craft markets — the town has a genuine artisan community; look for local ceramics, jewellery, and handmade artwork.
  • 🍷Da Capo Vineyards — a small wine farm nearby that most visitors drive straight past, with beautiful views and tastings on a working farm.

Where to eat

J-Bay has a good range of casual beachside eateries serving fresh grilled seafood, with a few more polished spots in town for evening meals. For breakfast, aim for somewhere with a view of Supertubes — watching surfers work the break over eggs and coffee is a J-Bay morning ritual. During competition season in July, popular spots fill up fast so plan ahead.

Best time to visit

June–July is peak surf season and when the WSL event runs — the town buzzes but accommodation books out fast and prices climb. October–March is best for beach holidays — warm water, less wind, and plenty of space. The shoulder months either side (April–May and August–September) offer the best balance of good surf, fair prices, and manageable crowds.

Getting there

Fly into Gqeberha Airport (PLZ) and hire a car — the drive takes about 75 minutes on the N2. There are no commercial flights into J-Bay itself. A self-drive is by far the best way to explore this stretch of coast, giving you the flexibility to stop at St Francis Bay and other spots along the way.

Where to stay

The sweet spot in J-Bay is close enough to Supertubes to walk down before sunrise, but set back enough from the main strip to stay quiet at night. Look for places with an outdoor shower (essential after a surf), a braai area, and enough parking for boards. Roomly has a selection of handpicked local homes in Jeffreys Bay — from compact surf shacks for solo travellers to larger beach houses that comfortably fit a group.
