Port Alfred: The Eastern Cape's Hidden Gem

Straddling the Kowie River with a marina on one side and open beach on the other, Port Alfred punches well above its weight for a small South African town.

Why Port Alfred deserves more attention

Most travellers on the Eastern Cape drive straight through Port Alfred on their way to somewhere else. That's a mistake. This small town โ€” population around 25,000 โ€” sits at the mouth of the Kowie River and has a quiet charm that the better-known coastal spots have long since traded away for tourism infrastructure.

It's genuinely beautiful: Blue Flag beaches on either side of the river mouth, a working marina, a wilderness area you can canoe into for days, and some of the friendliest locals you'll encounter anywhere in the country.

The beaches

Port Alfred has two main beaches separated by the Kowie River mouth. West Beach is the more sheltered, family-friendly option โ€” calm water and easy swimming. East Beach is longer and more exposed, with stronger surf and better waves for bodyboarding and surfing. Both are pristine and rarely crowded outside of school holidays โ€” which, if you time your visit right, feels almost too good to be true.

The Kowie River and canoe trail

The Kowie River is Port Alfred's greatest asset for active travellers. The Kowie Canoe Trailis a two-day, self-paddling route through the Kowie Wilderness Area โ€” one of the very few such trails on the Eastern Cape. Day-trippers can rent canoes or kayaks from the marina and spend a few hours on the water without any commitment. The river is calm, the birdlife is exceptional (over 200 species have been recorded), and you're almost guaranteed to spot otters if you go quietly in the early morning.

Local tip:Start the canoe trail as early as possible. The bird activity in the first hour after sunrise is unlike anything you'll experience on the beach โ€” bring binoculars if you have them.

Things to do

  • ๐Ÿ›๏ธKowie Museum โ€” small but excellent, covering the 1820 Settlers history and the town's rich maritime past.
  • ๐ŸดHorseback riding on the beach โ€” several operators offer rides along East Beach at sunrise or sunset; one of those genuinely memorable South African experiences.
  • ๐ŸฆKariega Game Reserve โ€” about 45 minutes away, Kariega is a malaria-free Big Five reserve with exceptional guided drives. More intimate than the larger Kruger-area reserves and arguably better value.
  • ๐ŸŒŠKenton-on-Sea and Bushmans River โ€” a 30-minute drive west brings you to twin estuaries and some of the most scenic coastal real estate on the Eastern Cape.
  • ๐ŸŽฃDeep sea and river fishing โ€” the Kowie is known for grunter and garrick; the ocean for yellowtail and shad.

Where to eat

The marina-side restaurant at The Halyards Hotel has good food and excellent views of the boats coming in โ€” it's the most reliably consistent spot in town for a proper meal. For something more casual, the main road has a handful of family-run restaurants serving honest South African cooking; the kind of place where the owner brings your food and genuinely asks if you enjoyed it.

Best time to visit

Port Alfred has a mild climate year-round. November through March is warm and sunny โ€” ideal for beaches and water activities. April through October is cooler but rarely cold, and the natural environment is lush. Winter evenings call for a log fire, which most self-catering accommodation in the area is well equipped for.

Getting there

Port Alfred is roughly 130 km from Gqeberha and 170 km from East London โ€” about 90 minutes in either direction. There's no commercial airport; the closest is Gqeberha (PLZ). The drive on the N2 and R72 coastal road is straightforward, scenic, and a pleasure to do at your own pace.

Where to stay

Self-catering is the best way to experience Port Alfred. Marina-side properties let you braai on the deck and watch the boats drift in at sunset; beach-side homes put you steps from the surf. Roomly has a selection of locally owned homes in Port Alfred suited to couples, families, and groups looking to slow down for a few days.
